Contained here are events I can foresee championing through the library media center. These events will celebrate and instill in the community inside and outside the school the power of collaboration and inspiration on growing minds.
Friendship Day
Share a story like Frog and Toad Are Friends followed with inflection via discussion.
Book Tasting Cafe
A blank menu is provided to write down books students find interesting when presented with a tray to select from (each tray will contain titles from a different genre) or represent current titles on the Bluebonnet or Lonestar possible award winners for this school year.
Global Maker Day
Variety of maker stations positioned throughout the library. Teachers, parents, and community members are invited to assist/explore when students are in a maker station or creating a video. Students create a video of their creation adding audio to explaining their process and the purpose of their invention.
Picture Book Day
Reading Buddies share their favorite picture books with each other, then work together to create their own digital picture book.
Author Visit
An author such as Dori Hillestad Butler will present to each grade on her passion for reading and writing through a virtual visit. Students will hear one of her books and craft questions before the actual day. Her titles include The Great Tooth Fairy Rip-off and Sliding Into Home.
Battle of the Books
Students get together in teams of 10, discuss books on their list, and trade books with team members to read. (Begin advertising in November to sign up a team.) On the BOB day, teams respond to questions on Kahoot, respond to questions in Google Form, and complete a puzzle matching title, author, and main characters from each of the ten books their team read. Winning team(s) receive an 'academy award', hugs, and cheers.
International Friendship Month
After sharing a multicultural title with each grade, students will design bookmarks and a card/letter to send to their international pen pal arranged through the International Association of School Librarianship.
Book Madness: A Tournament of Books
Based on the top 16 books circulated in the primary and intermediate grades, two book tournament brackets will be created. Students must read at least two of the books in their bracket in order to participate. Students will vote for the best book of the school year & predict winners using their own bracket. Each correct answer receives a point. The top 3 winner in primary and intermediate will receive a free brand new book which has been donated to the library for the event mirroring basketball's march madness.
A Poem in Your Pocket Day
Teachers and students keep a favorite poem or a poem they wrote in their pocket to share throughout the day.
Students will identify the use of poetic devices and discuss what it means and why they like the poem.
May the 4th Be With You
Storytime sharing a Star Wars book or related title followed by a discussion of character motives, themes, etc. Two craft stations to construct a Star Wars item to take home. Scavenger hunts in the library locating books according to the character description, theme, conflict, or resolution. Two different scavenger hunts for lower grades and upper grades.
